What happens when a buyer and seller disagree during a transaction.

Dispute Process

Template notice. This document is a template provided with the BuildMarket platform. It has not been reviewed by counsel for your jurisdiction or business. Replace or approve it in the admin panel before public launch.

1. Open a dispute

Either party can open a dispute from the transaction page while funds are held in escrow. Describe the problem and attach evidence (transfer checklist entries, messages, screenshots).

2. Funds stay in escrow

While a dispute is open the escrow provider holds the funds. Nobody is paid until the dispute is resolved.

3. Review

The BuildMarket trust team reviews the transaction record: the listing, deal room disclosures, the immutable transaction log, the transfer checklist and messages. We may ask both parties for information. Most disputes are resolved within 10 business days.

4. Outcomes

  • Resolved for the buyer: escrow refunds the buyer (less any escrow provider fees per its terms).
  • Resolved for the seller: the buyer is asked to confirm receipt; if they do not, the escrow provider's own dispute process applies.
  • Split: the parties agree a partial outcome recorded in the transaction log.

5. Escalation

If a party disagrees with BuildMarket's determination, the escrow provider's dispute resolution terms and the governing law in the Terms apply. BuildMarket's determination is a marketplace decision, not a legal judgment.
